Welcome to Year 8 Drama at John McGlashan College.
Be prepared for a creative journey through the arts...exploring not only the basics of drama, but exploring the realms of media and technology, theatre and film genres, music, and improvisation.
We begin with building on the drama skills we started with in Year 7, recapping on the purpose of warm-up exercises and then exploring the expressive potential of the performer's tools - voice and body. We then move into our first unit, Fairytale Unit, where we research popular Fairytale stories, and then in groups, write a script which will be recoded as a radio show or "podcast". You will then use this vocal recording as the basis of a movement/mime based performance - playing it in the background as you mime out actions.
Most of our time will be spent on our major unit, Greek Theatre, where we will research the history of the genre, stage design, costumes, masks, and Greek myths and legends. You may get the chance to get to design and paint your very own Greek Theatre mask, or build a 3-D version of a Greek stage, or come up with a Greek costume; and write a script based on a Greek myth and perform it to the class.
Imaginary Worlds - optional unit. This is a super-creative unit which calls on you to devise your own imaginary world in a number of ways, using the amazing course book as a basis.
