DRAMA (NCEA LEVEL 1)
Pre-Requisite: Open entry, although Yr7, Yr8 Y9 or 10 Drama is an advantage.
Course Content:
This course builds on skills developed in the junior drama courses. It requires the use of perception, imagination, speculation and interpretation as students develop practical knowledge in drama, develop ideas in drama, communicate and interpret in drama, and understand drama in context.
The level 1 NCEA Drama course has an emphasis on students devising their own work whilst developing a sound knowledge of dramatic techniques, elements and conventions. These are the building blocks and tools used to structure, enhance and bring meaning to drama.
Students are also required to study, select and use features of a specific theatre form in a performance. They are required to perform an acting role in a scripted drama and attend a live professional theatre performance during the year. There is one external exam paper requiring students to demonstrate understanding of features of a specific theatre form (Melodrama).
Assessment: Achievement Standards - 4 Internal (18 credits) / 1 External (4 credits) TOTAL: 22 credits
Course Aims
Enable students in drama to:
- develop communication skills through drama practice
- understand the social and cultural context of their work
- use their imagination, thoughts and feelings to create dramatic works
- develop critical and reflective awareness in relation to their own and others drama
- attain and extend a range of social skills
- foster self confidence and esteem through drama performance
- extend their practical skills and craft of drama
- engage with drama as an expression of culture
